UAE-Saudi Highway Gets Massive Revamp

- A major upgrade for the Mafraq-Ghuweifat highway has recently been completed, and is now open to vehicular traffic
- The AED 5.3 billion upgrade covered a 246-kilometre stretch of the 327-kilometre UAE-Saudi highway
- The revamp is expected to ease common problems like congestion and weather-related hazards for motorists
- One of the major new improvements was an increase in the number of lanes in either direction; each lane of the highway can accommodate up to 2500 vehicles per hour
- The Mafraq-Ghuweifat highway is the main route that connects the UAE to Saudi Arabia
- The highway revamp project, which commenced in March 2014, was undertaken by Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport in collaboration with Musanada
- The works on the UAE-Saudi highway were carried out in six construction packages, and also included the set-up of 16 new interchanges
- The Mafraq-Ghuweifat highway is the most commonly used route by freight traffic for coming into and leaving the UAE
- The highway upgrade is part of Musanada’s efforts, in line with the Abu Dhabi Plan, of which one of the objectives is to provide an effective transport system serving Abu Dhabi
