Etisalat Customers Warned Against Scammers

- People who have Etisalat mobile connections have been cautioned against calls from scammers who claim the customer has won a prize
- The scammers call Etisalat customers or message them through WhatsApp, demanding for bank account details and payments
- Customers have been scammed with stories that they won AED 100,000 in a random draw, bagged AED 20,000 from Etisalat or were told to buy three prepaid Etisalat cards which cost AED 500 each
- According to authorities, scammers have been targeting only Etisalat customers at present, and not users of du
- Etisalat is the oldest and one of the only two telecom companies which operates in UAE, and has now expanded operations to more than 17 countries in and around the Middle East
- Another common sim card fraud that has happened recently in UAE is one where sim cards are swapped by stealing a person’s identity
- Sim card scams are especially dangerous because they extract personal details and fabricate official documents to pose as another person
- Apart from calls and messages, scammers also try to get information via email and app notifications
- Any official documents that are submitted to banks or other entities are always scanned and verified by authorities, to prevent such scams from spreading
