Awesome new cars at the Geneva Motor Show

For most people, Switzerland is known for chocolate, watches, and neutrality. For car enthusiasts, it is known for excess. That’s because the annual Geneva International Motor Show is where automakers tend to show off their most outrageous cars.

The most eagerly awaited car of the show, Bugatti’s Chiron is the successor to the ludicrous Veyron, maybe the best car ever. The Chiron was designed to surpass the Veyron in every aspect. The engineering brief could be summed up as “more.” It is faster, more comfortable, more elegant, more unconscionably and unfathomably powerful. It’s massive 16-cylinder engine produces 1,500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque. Its top speed remains unknown, but software will limit customers to 261 mph. DOMINIC FRASER/BUGATTI

Citroen is going electric, and it’s doing it in style. The DS E-Tense is a fully electric supercar that will produce more than 400 horsepower and hit a top speed of 155 mph thanks to a pair of lithium-ion batteries located underneath the floor. DS AUTOMOBILES

At 18’3″, Bentley’s Mulsanne sedan is a massive car. Naturally, that’s not big enough for some people. That’s why Bentley showed up in Geneva with the Mulsanne Grand Limousine—the same car, now three feet longer. It also comes with a partition that goes from clear to opaque with the touch of a button, a bottle cooler, champagne flutes, and bespoke tumblers. BENTLEY

Not every pile of metal in Geneva is a supercar. Take the little Renault Scénic, the French automaker’s new “multi-purpose vehicle” that’s all about shuttling families around during those month-long vacations. So long, minivans. RENAULT

If less is more, the Porsche 911R might be everything. The German automaker took the 4-liter engine from the GT3 RS and matched it to a six-speed manual transmission. It threw out the back seats and air conditioner, and used carbon fiber to bring the car’s weight down to just over 3,000 pounds. The result is a $184,900 car that will go to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and likely be an absolute thrill to drive. PORSCHE

Everyone loves an SUV, including the superrich. At least, that’s what automakers seem to think: Bentley’s got the Bentayga. Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, and Lamborghini all have plans to follow suit soon. Maserati got into the game at Geneva with the Levante. Powered by a 3-liter V6, the sportier version will produce 430 horsepower.

Bugatti doesn’t have many rivals, but Koenigsegg is on the list. The Swedish automaker finds the term “supercar” a bit underwhelming—it prefers to call its new Regera a “megacar.” It combines a 5-liter V8 engine with a 4.5-kWh battery pack to make 1,500 horsepower, matching the Chiron. Koenigsegg says the Regera will hit 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and get to 248 mph in under 11 seconds. KOENIGSEGG

To mark 100 years since the birth of Ferruccio Lamborghini, the company he created built the $1.9 million Centenario. The new supercar packs a naturally aspirated V12 engine that will produce 770 horsepower. V12 engines are known for singing like Anna Netrebko, but this one hits an even higher note, redlining at 8,600 rpm to prove that yes, your eyes can open that much wider. And of course it’s made almost entirely of carbon fiber because, well, at this price, it damn well better be. LAMBORGHINI

The new 570GT is the third model in McLaren’s “Sports Series,” its line of more affordable models that aren’t quite as ludicrous as those at the upper end of the range. The 570GT may not match the raw numbers of the 650S, but the specs are nothing to laugh at. The car sends 562 horsepower to the rear wheels, along with 433 pound-feet of torque. Combine that with a total weight of under 3,000 pounds (thanks largely to a carbon fiber core that weighs just 165 pounds), and you can run from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds and top out at 204 mph. MCLAREN

The GTC4Lusso has everything you expect from Ferrari. 600 horsepower from the 6.2-liter V12. 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds. Top speed is a lofty 207 mph, and there’s room for the whole (four person) family. FERRARI

Aston Martin says the all-new DB11 is the most important car it’s ever made. That’s because the successor to the DB9 is the first result of a major investment the company made in the technology it needs to keep up with competitors like Ferrari and McLaren. The classy coupe will go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and up to 200 mph. But can it save the company?Dominic Fraser
