WestJet Extends Checked Baggage Fee to International Flights

WestJet Airlines Ltd. is extending the fees it charges for baggage and seat selection to international markets starting early next year after those fees generated the entire increase in the airline’s overall revenue in the third quarter.
Passengers checking one bag on WestJet’s international flights will pay a $25 fee that matches the levy the airline places on bags checked on domestic flights.
WestJet is matching Air Canada on baggage fees on some U.S. and Caribbean destinations – Montreal to Aruba, for example – but is now ahead of that airline when it comes to fees on flights to Europe and other international destinations, where its larger rival does not charge a bag fee. Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said Tuesday that the airline has no plans to introduce a first bag fee on international routes. Details
