UAE’s First Nuclear Plant hits new Milestone

- The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation announced that significant progress has been made on the construction of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, with the installation of the steam generators for Unit 4, the final unit at the plant
- The project is progressing steadily with Unit 4 more than 52% complete and Unit 1 more than 96% complete as of August 2017
- A delegation of the General Secretariat of the Executive Council (GSEC) held a commemoration ceremony in Barakah, to mark the installation of steam generators at Unit 4
- When all the four reactors are completed, the Barakah plant will save up to 21 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year
- The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is the United Arab Emirates’s first nuclear power station, and the world’s largest nuclear energy construction site
- The General Secretariat of the Executive Council is the administrative authority entrusted with proposing UAE’s general policies and strategies, and present them to the Executive Council to take proper decisions on the regard
- The four APR-1400 nuclear reactors of the Barakah plant are planned to start operation successively between 2017 and 2020
- UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant site is located on the country’s Persian Gulf coastline between the sea and the E11 highway, about 50 km west of Ruwais
- In December 2009, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) awarded a coalition led by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), a USD 20 billion bid to build the Barakah plant in UAE
