UAE Bans Japanese Soy Sauce Brand

- The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) issued a warning prohibiting the imports of Japanese Kikkoman soy sauce due to its alcohol content
- The ministry has also banned the circulation of the product in the UAE market according to Ministerial Resolution No. (539) of 2012
- The ban came based on the results of tests conducted by specialised accredited laboratories, which confirmed that several samples of the product with different production dates violated the rules
- The ministry clarified that the ban specifically targets Kikkoman soy sauce made in Japan and does not include Kikkoman products produced in other countries
- Only those who are over the age of 21 are allowed to consume alcohol in UAE
- The sale of alcohol in UAE is controlled, and only available from special licensed outlets and licensed hotels and bars, sold under certain conditions
- UAE has previously banned fruits and vegetables from being imported from specific countries because of high levels of pesticides, coffee brands containing sibutramine, and fruit drinks that have been found to have alcohol content
- All fresh produce and processed foods in UAE are tested by the ministry, in laboratories accredited by the British Commission for Accreditation, to ensure they meet international standards
- Using banned products in UAE can lead to fines, imprisonment or even deportation, depending on the severity of the violation
