After directing and starring in dozens of the short films which had made him the highest-paid and most widely recognized human being on earth within two years of his first appearance before the cameras in 1914, Chaplin turned his energies for the first time to a more extended work. Although less than an hour long, this comedy/drama stars Chaplin and 6-yeard old Jackie Coogan as his adopted son and sidekick.
Perhaps because it may have been based on memories of his impoverished London childhood, it became one of the most popular and durable of all the great comic’s immortal hits.
Directed by, starring, and with an original score by Charlie Chaplin, the American film released in 1921. The new 4K digital restored film runs about 53 minutes.
