Speed limit in UAE to be increased

UAE traffic authorities have decided to increase the minimum speed on motorways to tackle traffic jams caused by motorists driving too slow.
The Federal Traffic Council approved the increase at its recent meeting after it found that the margin between the maximum and minimum speed limits is too big, the council’s chairman and Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, Major-General, Mohammed Al Zafin said, quoted by ‘Emarat Al Youm’ daily.
One of the roads to be affected is Sheikh Zayed Road, he said and added that a 60kmph minimum speed limit on this road is too low.
“We have decided that the margin between the maximum and minimum speed limits must not exceed 20kmph.
“The proposal now is to increase the minimum speed limits on those roads to 100kmph,” he said.
“We have found that the existing margin is very big and this is causing traffic jams as some drivers believe they can drive at 60kmph on a road with a maximum speed of 140kmph.”
Its a good move 😀
Yes, with the strict licensing process here, the drivers should already be capable of maintaining the minimum speed limit.
Absolutely – it’s easy to cruise @ 100KMPH on such big roads.
Amiright mr mr so fresh and so clean clean.
I think this is one the smartest moves they have done, I really welcome it! People, especially on Sh. Zayed Road, are not paying attention to the actual driving of their vehicles, everyone is on their phones constantly! Calling or texting and it poses a real danger to other motorists. This might get people to focus more on driving and be more safe.
I think tailgating is the biggest issue. They should start punishing that and avoiding accidents before increasing the speed limit. I would suggest that a bulk of the traffic is caused my accidents anyway
It does not matter at all that they increase the base speed limit. There are still going to be a majority of people driving slow in every single lane. That is the cause of the most accidents. People get frustrated by the slow drivers and end up either A) taligating to get them to move and B) having to switch lanes to get around the idiots driving slow in the fast lanes. The frequency of switching lanes increases your chances to be in an accident here. If everyone that drove slow stayed out of the far two left lanes there would be a huge decrease in traffic. Everything would flow smooth and there would be a decrease in accidents. By no means am I saying the people that overspeed by 40km plus are not causing accidents too. They do, but most of the accidents I see are caused by slow drivers getting in the way. I cannot count the number of times I have been cut off in the fast lane doing the speed limit by a SLOW driver merging into the fast lane. Did they speed up after? NO of course not. They continued to go their 10 to 20 under the speed limit. Will they ever be punished for this? NO. I don’t agree the licensing process is strict here. If it was, we would not have all these uninformed slow drivers in the fast lane and passing lane. It seems they don’t teach this in any of the driving classes at ALL. Again I do not think increasing the base speed limit will do anything. Provding correct guidance before handing out a license to people will help. More police pulling slow peole over, will help. Increasing the base speed limit will do nothing until people learn to drive correctly. Thanks for trying though…
