Skype Could be Replaced by Etisalat’s New Calling App

- Etisalat have launched a new internet calling plan, 11 days after UAE Skype users noticed that Skype calls stopped working
- The unlimited calling plans enable UAE subscribers to use VoIP apps at a fixed rate of AED 52.50 a month for use on mobile devices
- The cost to use Etisalat’s plan over a computer connected to an eLife account would be AED 105 a month
- The monthly fee, which amounts to AED 1260 a year, will be charged automatically every 30 days
- Etisalat is one of the two national telecommunications operators in UAE, and the 14th largest mobile network operator in the world
- Etisalat is the largest carrier of international voice traffic in the Middle East and Africa and the 12th largest voice carrier in the world
- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a method and group of technologies for voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol networks
- BOTIM and C’Me are currently the only apps that comply to UAE regulatory framework requirements for VoIP calling
- The use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), possibly used to circumvent local internet restrictions, is illegal in the UAE
