Abu Dhabi’s newest retail and dining destination, My City Centre Masdar is sustainable to its core!
If you’re a follower of ‘Go Green’, then you must not miss My City Centre Masdar. Watch out for the first shopping mall in the Capital by Majid Al Futtaim. It is a welcome attraction for the residents of Masdar City and the surrounding community. Regarded as the region’s most sustainable mall through the efficient use of energy and water resources, My City Centre Masdar reflects UAE’s long-term sustainability goals.
My City Centre Masdar Features
The mall encompasses 18,500 sqm of retail area featuring more than 70 stores including Redtag, Carrefour, Life Pharmacy, Al Jaber Optical, Zaatar w Zeit, Kababji and Cinnabon. Talking of vehicle parking, no worries! The mall has 600 car parking bays and to our surprise, they are shaded by roofing housing photovoltaic cells to generate electricity equivalent to one-fifth of the mall’s annual energy usage. About 6% of parking space has been set aside for electric, hybrid or carshare vehicles – and half of these spaces are equipped with charging points.
Other sustainability-focused features include energy-efficient escalators and lifts, and the exclusive use of LED lighting In fact, the eco-friendly mall plans to recycle at least 80% of its operational waste.
Carrefour Hypermarket
The 7,000-sq-m Carrefour hypermarket at My City Centre is the 100th store of the French brand in the UAE. Inside the hypermarket, you can find decor featuring sustainable sourced wood, as well as a wide array of locally grown produce on display.
Don’t forget to get your carry bag as Carrefour won’t offer you a single-use plastic bag at the check-out counter. Added to this, it has a “Recycle and get Rewarded” machine, where you can deposit your plastics and get a voucher to spend in Carrefour in return. Double Bonus!
iScream
To complete your shopping, the mall offers a bunch of eateries too. Amongst them, the well known ice cream shop iScream is not to miss out. It has launched its first Abu Dhabi venue at the new mall. Already popular in Dubai, iScream is all set to serve all sorts of quirky flavours, from curry to black sesame, and Emirati coffee to wasabi. And if you’re a bit choosy, try your pick on White Owl Coffee Roasters, Classic Rock Cafe, Poke Poke, Sushi Art and Jelly Belly.
