Saudi Women in Joy as the Ban on Driving Ends Soon

- Many Saudi Women are eagerly looking forward to June 24th, from when they could officially start driving.
- Saudi authorities would issue around 2,000 driving licenses although many women have already received their drivers’ licenses.
- “It is important for women to learn how to drive to develop self-confidence and self-reliance,” says Saudi national Tahani Al Dosemani.
- Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman initiated the royal decree last year to get Saudi women to be more active in the workforce.
- Tahani, who is a professor, is also among the first few to have received their driver’s license and many like her are overjoyed with the countdown.
- The process of converting foreign license into a Saudi license is simple and smart, as told by Tahani.
- Online applications are filed through Abshir portal, where documents including national ID/residence permit, medical examination report, and a translated copy of the foreign license are uploaded.
- After which applicants receive a date and time for driving tests and exams, and if once successful, you would receive the driver’s license.
- Many Saudi women like Tahani are not just happy for freedom in driving, but also for being able to save the driver’s money and for not relying on anyone anymore.
