Rain in Abu Dhabi: Why no more water-logging

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (Abu Dhabi City Municipality) is planning to undertake during the third quarter of this year construction works in upgrading rainwater drainage works at a cost exceeding Dh39 million.
The project is set for completion two years after the start date.
The project epitomises the keenness of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport and the Abu Dhabi City Municipality to improve the infrastructure of rainwater lines to match the scope of the development drive, the sprawling facilities, and the sweeping development drive witnessed by Abu Dhabi at various fronts.
The project is part of the deliverables of the storm-water master plan which charts out the works required for improving the operational conditions of the existing system, and fulfilling the needs of development up to 2030 as the project covers the entire peripheries of Abu Dhabi Island.
The scope of project works covers completing the construction of rainwater drainage networks along with the required pumping stations at various parts of Abu Dhabi city (Al Musaffah, Al Maqtaa, Shakhbout city, Baniyas, and Mohammed bin Zayed City).
The project will be undertaken in carefully planned phases and an initiative has been undertaken to carry out a variety of rainwater drainage-related works.
The Municipality has also offered three similar projects covering all the confines of Abu Dhabi City Municipality i.e. Abu Dhabi Island, islands surrounding Abu Dhabi Island, Mainland North, and Mainland South.
This procedure has mitigated the risks and generated an array of benefits such as: improving the quality of project construction as a result of competition between contractors, reduced financial risks on contractors including alleviating the financial burden & obligation in case of awarding the major project to multiple contractors, offering better opportunities for larger number of local contractors to operate in the Emirate, and creating considerable job prospects for attracting & appointing Emirati engineers in the Abu Dhabi City Municipality.
The Municipality is implementing the Resolution of the Executive Council awarding this project amounting to Dh39.6 million for construction period of 730 days. It will finalise the awarding procedures and task the contractor to start the project works according to the pre-set project schedule.
The rainwater drainage project involves modifying the existing rainwater drainage works in order to improve the efficiency, increase ability of drainage capacity of rainwater and ground water; which will thus prevent the chances of floods.
It includes taking preventive solutions for the improvement of rainwater drainage system, and eliminating the creation of ponds which have negative impacts and contribute to the proliferation of epidemics.
As regards the technical specifications, the project will serve the assets of the existing infrastructure of rainwater in Abu Dhabi city comprising 149,707 points for collecting and draining water, 57 pumping stations, and 5,182 km long of sewage lines. The network assets are on the increase everyday as a result of taking over new assets from developers.
Following the completion of project works in Abu Dhabi Mainland, the project will enhance the efficiency of the network and step up its ability to accommodate rainfalls more efficiently.
The Municipality is implementing a plan according to a specific plan set for upgrading all components of infrastructure inside and outside Abu Dhabi Island to cope with the sweeping development of Abu Dhabi and realise the sustainable development.
