Philippine Poultry Restricted from Import in UAE

- UAE is restricting imports from an affected province of Philippines which has been hit with its first outbreak of avian flu, said the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment on 14th August, 2017
- The UAE ministry is locking down its import control gates to guard against any incoming live or processed bird products originating from the province of Pampanga, Philippines
- The World Organization for Animal Health issued a notification about the registration of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Republic of the Philippines, causing the import restriction
- UAE will allow the importation of thermally-treated poultry products (treated meat and processed egg products) and thermally treated poultry waste from all of the Republic of the Philippines
- Avian flu, which is commonly referred to as bird flu, H5N1 or avian influenza, is strains of the influenza virus that primarily infects birds, but can also infect humans in some cases
- UAE works to implement the Federal Law No. 10 of 2015 on the safety of food, which applies to all establishments licensed to trade food or feed, and consignments coming to the country or passing through its territory
- A certificate of origin, health certificate and other required certificates such as Halal certificate are required for importing any food items into UAE
- The most common way for avian flu to spread among humans is through airborne respiratory droplets, like coughs and sneezes
- In 2005, the International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic Influenza was formed to elevate the importance of avian flu, coordinate efforts, and improve disease reporting and surveillance in order to better respond to future pandemics
