New Update for the Oxford Dictionary

- Around 1,000 new/refreshed words have been added to the online Oxford English Dictionary (Oed.com) in its quarterly update.
- Brencheese, Deathshildy, and Hip-pop are few of the examples out of the 1,000 new words.
- “The OED tracks usage for at least 10 years before deciding whether to add a new entry, new definition or word related to an existing entry,” – Katherine Connor Martin (US Dictionary Operations Head)
- Few more highlights were Imposter Syndrome, Silent Generation and Homophily, which are new words are already obsolete but was not in the dictionary.
- The dictionary’s 20-volume third edition in print has been in process since 2000 and likely won’t be ready for more than a decade.
- Brencheese is a rare reference to bread and cheese when eaten together, whereas Deathshildy refers to the Old English for someone guilty of a capital crime and condemned to death.
- Along with the ancient esoterics are some cultural obligations: binge-watching, spoiler alert and microaggression, all buzzy today.
- The OED found a 1985 reference in a Pennsylvania newspaper to “hip-hip pop,” and a 1991 reference in a Florida newspaper to M.C. Hammer’s “hip-pop”.
- Imposter Syndrome dates back to 1982, Silent Generation to 1939-45, and Homophily to 1953.
