Hungary Calls On Countries Outside Europe to Share Burden of Migrant Crisis

Prime Minister Viktor Orban Says Governments Whose Policies Fueled Crisis Should Take Responsibility
Hungary’s leader proposed that migrants fleeing the war-torn regions of the Middle East and Afghanistan should be relocated not only within Europe but also to countries outside the continent whose policies have contributed to the migration crisis.
In a speech ahead of a United Nations meeting on migration Wednesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban urged U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to start negotiations on spreading the burden of the crisis globally.
“All major stakeholders of international politics will have to take some of the migrants to their countries as part of a global quota system,” Mr. Orban said.
Mr. Orban—whose government has taken a hard-line approach to the crisis and built a wall on its southern border to stem the flow of migrants—said the migrants were also victims “of the failed international political decisions.” In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, Mr. Orban suggested that the U.S. and others, including Arab countries, should take in some of the refugees who have poured into Europe.
