Dubai Police Fine Nearly 38000 Drivers for Safety Violations
- Dubai Police have fined almost 38,000 people because they failed to follow safety rules and ensure that all passengers in the car are wearing a seat belt
- The number of offenders on Dubai roads has reduced significantly since mandatory seatbelt rules for backseat passengers came in on 1st July, 2017
- 37520 fines had been issued by Dubai Police, of which 1077 were given directly to the drivers, while the rest were issued by cameras
- The breakdown of the figures by month so far in 2017 is: January, 8102; February, 5786; March, 5933; April, 5967; May, 6352; June, 2759; and 2621 in July
- Dubai Police is the main regulatory authority in the emirate, with a force of 15000, functioning for over 60 years in Dubai
- From 1st July, 2017, seat belts were made mandatory for all drivers and passengers in UAE, with a penalty of AED 400 for failing to do so
- 2016 saw 42291 traffic violation fines throughout the whole year in Dubai
- According to Dubai Police, traffic studies indicate that use of seat belts reduces fatalities, and also reduces severe injuries in case of a collision
- Rules for Dubai driving licenses were also changed from 1st July, 2017, wherein new licenses will be valid for 2 years, renewed licenses will be valid for 5 years for expats and 10 years for GCC and UAE nationals
