This exciting and unique programme offers participants the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative manner, with students, recent graduates, architects and other creative individuals who wish to further their knowledge, practice and skills in architecture and design.
Modelled on the Architectural Association’s famed system of teaching and learning architecture – through the pursuit of agenda driven projects, the workshop will allow participants to engage with Abu Dhabi’s architectural, technological, cultural and urban development.
A central feature of the programme is that experimental, new and provocative forms of architecture are best learned by doing – by embedding a group of creative students and tutors in a setting so that intensive exploration, discovery and work can be brought to bear on one highly refined, closely defined project,
problem or possibility.
Abu Dhabi is a city teeming with sites of production – from the workshop to the studio, and from the food vendor to the office. Production can also entail that which has no physical manifestation. That of ideas, of social structures, even financial products. So how does one begin to define ‘production’ in a city as diverse as Abu Dhabi? Is Production socially-determined, geographically- determined, or perhaps a combination of multiple factors?
The intention of the workshop is to produce an urban analysis of the city and to assess different sites each relating to a specific, but unique form of production. We aim to uncover the complex networks, with their plethora of supply chains and collaborators and to connect the local scale of the city to larger regional and global scales. That which is produced must be consumed, a city can never function on one alone. Even the shopping mall, can be read as a social catalyst, which uses consumption to produce alternative social and cultural formations in the city.
The outcome of the workshop is to document Abu Dhabi in way that converges the worlds of production and consumption. To produce windows into the greater productive functions of the city. Vignettes that are both conceptual and physical windows into the city of Abu Dhabi.
