AED 400 Fine for not Wearing Seatbelt From 1st July 2017

- All passengers in a vehicle in UAE will have to compulsorily wear a seatbelt from 1st July, 2017
- If any of the passengers are found not wearing a seatbelt, the driver will be fined AED 400 per violator and charged four black points, and the same penalty will be applied if there is not appropriate child car seat for children
- Short people and children below 10 years of age are not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat, as the seatbelt might be a choke hazard
- The amendments to the federal traffic law was officially signed in March 2017 by Lt-Gen Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, to be implemented from 1st July
- In 2016, 725 people died in UAE in traffic accidents alone
- UAE has a goal of decreasing the number of fatalities from the current rate of 6.1/100,000 residents to 3/100,000 by 2021, as part of UAE Vision 2021
- According to a research project carried out by RoadSafetyUAE in February 2017, only 78% of drivers, 71% of front seat passengers and only 11% of back-seat passengers always wear seatbelts
- 34% of UAE drivers don’t have proper child restraint systems and if they do, 30% don’t always use them for their kids, as per a research project carried out by RoadSafetyUAE in February 2017
- In case of a car crash there is a 40% to 60% chance of survival, and the chances are increased by taking more safety measures within the car
