30000 People Gather at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for Iftar

- Over 30000 Muslims gathered at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque on Thursday, 1st June, 2017, to break their Ramadan fast at sunset
- People began pouring into the massive mosque from 05:00 PM on Thursday, and the worshippers broke their fast around 07:00 PM that evening, when cannons were fired to signal Iftar
- Twelve air-conditioned tents were set up on the premises of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to accommodate the volume of worshippers
- The huge numbers of people who go to the mosque to observe Iftar could not be accommodated within the tents set up for them, and had to use the gardens and parking lots instead
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in the capital city of Abu Dhabi, ranked as the second-most favourite tourist spot in the world, and the main mosque for Muslims all over UAE
- The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is named after and is the resting place of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of UAE, who always advocated a spirit of peace and tolerance
- Ramadan is a holy month observed by all Muslims, which falls in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which they fast and focus on the Five Pillars of Islam
- Ramadan is celebrated in UAE from 27th May till 24th June in 2017
- Iftar is the time of the day when Muslims break their fast, at sunset, usually with a large spread of delicacies shared with family and friends at home or in public spaces
