20kmph Speed Buffer on Abu Dhabi Roads to be Phased out

- The buffer that allows motorists to travel at 20kph more than the advertised speed limit is set to be phased out on a number of Abu Dhabi roads
- An Abu Dhabi Police official said the decision is intended to prevent confusion and improve road safety
- The first sign of the planned change came last week on the new motorway between Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia, the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road
- Thomas Edelmann, founder of RoadSafetyUAE, has long urged the authorities to put an end to the buffer and welcomed the decision
- The Abu Dhabi Police is the regulatory authority in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, who are mainly responsible for all matters related to safety and security of the residents of Abu Dhabi
- RoadSafetyUAE is the first road safety portal in UAE, which aims to raise the UAE’s traffic participants’ awareness for proper conduct on roads
- The Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road links the the capital to the Al Dhafra region and Saudi Arabia
- Speed cameras on the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road are set to record at 161kph, meaning the usual 20kph buffer does not apply on this road
- Road crashes are the second leading cause of death in Abu Dhabi and are the number one crash cause for young drivers, according to Abu Dhabi Department of Transport
