Route 2020 Subway Drilling Begins

- Drilling work on the Route 2020 was launched on Tuesday, 24th October, by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
- A giant tunnel digger, the Wegisha Expo 2020, has been deployed to bore through underground stretches and connect it with a 11.8km elevated track
- The tunnel will be between 12.5m and 36m underground and excavation is expected to be completed by December 2018
- Work on the new link will connect the Dubai Metro Red Line service on Sheikh Zayed Road to the expo grounds in Dubai South
- Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai
- Route 2020 is the 15-km extension of Dubai Metro’s Red Line to the Dubai Expo 2020 venue
- Route 2020 is expected to handle 20% of people coming to the expo, with trains ferrying 35,000 commuters daily during the week and 47,000 on weekends
- Along Route 2020 will be five stations above ground, two underground stations, an interchange area, and an expo station
- Infrastructure, civil and electromechanical construction of Route 2020 with all railway works is expected to be completed in July 2019
