Shoaib Malik scored an unbeaten century to signal an impressive comeback to Test cricket after a five-year gap, his innings helping Pakistan end the first day of the first Test against England in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday (October 13) on 286 for 4 after having chosen to bat.

Malik ended the day on 124, having added a crucial 168 for the second wicket with Mohammad Hafeez, who missed his century by two runs. Malik has so far hit 14 boundaries in his 230-ball innings.

The day was also memorable for Younis Khan, who became Pakistan’s leading scorer in Test cricket when he overhauled Javed Miandad’s tally of 8832 runs. Younis, playing his 102nd Test, hit Moeen Ali for a six over deep midwicket to reach 21 and cross Miandad’s tally. Younis ended on 38.

England struggled for wickets under the hot desert sun, and two dropped catches – both by Ian Bell off James Anderson – didn’t help their cause either. Details
