- Every Emirates ID in the UAE has a PIN number, which can be used to access personal data and authorise the holder’s identity
- The 4-digit Emirates ID PIN can be generated either at the time of registration or by visiting the nearest registration centre and notifying the supervisor to activate the PIN
- The Emirates ID PIN can protect the holder from identity theft and identity fraud, especially when combined with the fingerprint recognition system
- The Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) handles all matters related to the Emirates ID, including activating the PIN, resetting the PIN, and changing it in case the card gets locked
- The Emirates ID is a mandatory identity for every national and resident of UAE, meant to be a portable database that provides all the personal details of the holder
- The Emirates ID is issued by the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA), and has an electronic chip that is used by the authorities to identify the details each citizen and resident of UAE
- There are 2 EIDA branches in Ajman, 15 in Abu Dhabi, 11 in Dubai, 4 in Fujairah, 2 in Ras Al Khaimah, 11 in Sharjah and 1 in Umm Al Quwain
- The validity of the Emirates ID of expats is directly linked to the validity of their visa, so the card needs to be renewed once in two years for the average UAE resident
- The Emirates ID is valid for five years for Emiratis, after which it needs to be renewed
