Heavier Traffic Fines in Effect from 1st July 2017 in UAE
- New traffic laws have into effect in UAE from 1st July, 2017, to reduce the number of accidents and deaths on the roads
- The heaviest penalty in UAE will be for driving under the influence of alcohol, for which a fine of AED 20000 will be charged, along with 23 black points, confiscation of license for 60 days, and the possibility of jail term
- For speeding, the largest penalty will be charged against drivers going over 80 kph, which will result in AED 3000 fine, 23 black points and confiscation of license for 60 days, and the same penalty for driving without a license plate
- Riding a quad bike on the road will cost the rider AED 3000 and confiscation for 90 days, while littering on the road will be charged at AED 1000 and the jaywalking penalty is AED 400
- In 2016, 725 people died in UAE in traffic accidents alone
- UAE has a goal of decreasing the number of fatalities from the current rate of 6.1/100,000 residents to 3/100,000 by 2021, as part of UAE Vision 2021
- Driving in UAE is on the right hand side of the road, and the driver’s seat is on the left, similar to the driving style in USA
- According to a research project carried out by RoadSafetyUAE in February 2017, only 78% of drivers, 71% of front seat passengers and only 11% of back-seat passengers always wear seatbelts
- 34% of UAE drivers don’t have proper child restraint systems and if they do, 30% don’t always use them for their kids, as per a research project carried out by RoadSafetyUAE in February 2017
