China Philharmonic Orchestra with Long Yu: Tchaikovsky 5 – Music Event in Abu Dhabi
For its second concert in the UAE, the China Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) will be performing in Al Ain, under the baton of star conductor Long Yu. Considered today not only one of the very best Asian orchestras, but also a major player in the international music scene, playing at prestigious festivals like the Salzburger Osterfestspiele or the Proms, the CPO has managed to bring its distinctive sound to a worldwide audience, shedding a new light on many of the most popular classical compositions and discovering new masterpieces. Among the favourite composers of the CPO, the Russian genius Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky ranks today very much on top of the list. Written in 1888, his 5th Symphony is considered today as one of the 19th century’s paramount symphonic compositions.
It focuses, like many other works of the Russian musician, on the theme of fate that both the individual and the human community have to accept. With its recurring main theme, the 5th asks the question of human existence and happiness facing an overwhelming and sometimes difficult destiny. Like very few orchestras today, the CPO has been able to extract new aspects from this musical programme and brought the very popular symphony to a whole new level of expression. For the first part of the programme, CPO has chosen to play again with Chinese star cellist Jian Wang the concerto for violoncello and orchestra, Reflet d’un temps disparu, that Qigang Chen, who was Music Director of the summer Olympics ceremony in Beijing, wrote in France in 1995-1996.
