- Abu Dhabi City Municipality has conducted a 3-day campaign to inspect and curb the number of abandoned vehicles in the city
- The authorities fined more than 175 vehicles left unattended in public places during the campaign
- The owner of an abandoned vehicle has to report to the municipality with documents to prove his ownership and then pay a fine of AED 3000 to get it released
- Municipal inspectors first monitor and follow up an abandoned car for 3 days, and on the 3rd day, a notice is affixed to the vehicle, warning that the vehicle will be towed away within 24 hours
- The Abu Dhabi City Municipality organises this inspection campaign every year, to stop it from creating public nuisance, keeping the city clean, reducing pollution and increasing safety
- In 2016, 1233 abandoned vehicles were seized, 4929 warnings were given to owners and over 100 fines were issued
- The Municipality was keen to educate the public about the importance of cleaning cars and avoiding leaving them unattended in public places and parking lots for extended periods
- Areas covered include Abu Dhabi city, Baniyas West and East, Shakboot City, Shamkha, Shawamekh, Mussaffah, Al Fallah, Bahia, Al Sadr, Shalila, Shahama, Samha, and Rahba
- The fine for illegal sale of vehicles is AED 1000, while repeat offenders have to pay double-price
